OECD Water Governance Meeting – Day 1
More than 9 hours, over 80 participants and organisations came together in Madrid for the meeting on the OECD Water Governance Initiative.. And they are not done yet. Tomorrow, 29 April, the meeting will continue with in depth discussions. But what keeps these people in a room for over 9 hours, while outside the Spanish spring is calling for us?
The goals of the OECD Water Governance Initiative is to create a framework through which the OECD, and the water sector, can advice governments with respect to water governance. The idea is to create Water Governance Indicators, as it was stated: “What you can’t measure, you can’t improve”.
Aims for Youth in the meeting
- – Involving young people in the OECD WGI process by communication to young people what is happening.
- – Raise awareness for youth participation
- – Raise awareness for the importance of stakeholder involvement, education and capacity building for good water governance.
- – Be updated about the process
- – Identify new possibilities for youth participation in the process
Input in the plenary session
Thank you mister chair,
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers for including young people in these processes.
We are learning a lot at these meetings and dedicate ourselves to share these experiences, lessons learned and follow up processes among as many youth organisations as possible. We would like to ask you to do the same.
Young people have been constructively involved in the Budapest water summit, and we work hard towards quality youth participation in international water processes, such as the world water forum.
We would like to stress the importance of, involving young people as important stakeholders, of capacity development and education which will contribute to the sustainability of the water sector and the sustainability of these international processes.
Thank you
Next steps:
The Water Governance Initiative has divided the members in 4 working groups: i) Stakeholder Engagement, ii) Performance and Governance of Water Supply and Sanitation Services (WSS), iii) Basin Governance, and vi)Water Integrity. These four working groups all provide input for the final document on Indicators. On 29 April, these working groups will discuss their input in detail.
