The 10th World Water Forum in Bali was an event to remember, not only for its focus on global water challenges but also for its remarkable inclusion and celebration of youth participation. As a young climate activist, I was both inspired and uplifted by the opportunities and platforms provided for young voices at this crucial global gathering.
What is the World Water Forum?
The World Water Forum, held every three years since 1997, is the largest international event focused on water issues. Organized by the World Water Council, the forum brings together stakeholders from governments, academia, civil society, and the private sector to address global water challenges and promote sustainable water management. The 10th edition, hosted in Bali from May 18 to 25, 2024, continued this tradition by emphasizing collaborative and innovative solutions to pressing water issues.
A Platform for Young Voices
The Youth Pavilion was a set as a hub that embodied the spirit of collaboration and innovation. It was more than just a space; it was a symbol of recognition for young water leaders. Here, we engaged in dynamic discussions, networked with peers and experts, and participated in workshops that enhanced our understanding of water governance. The pavilion facilitated an environment where ideas could flourish and young voices could be heard, reinforcing our crucial role in the water sector.
The Young Water Sustainability Leaders (YWSL) Program
One of the most impactful initiatives was the Young Water Sustainability Leaders (YWSL) program. Over 300 young participants from around the globe joined an intensive online bootcamp, which covered six critical thematic areas:
- Water Security and Prosperity
- Water for Humans and Nature
- Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
- Governance, Cooperation, and Hydro-Diplomacy
- Sustainable Water Finance
- Knowledge and Innovation
This program was an in-depth exploration of the complexities of water issues, guided by experts from various fields. It equipped youth participants with the knowledge and skills to formulate innovative solutions. Sixty Youths were selected as delegates to present their research at the forum, a recognition that not only honored hard work of young people worldwide but also underscored the importance of youth contributions to water sustainability.
Youth-Centric Activities
The forum also featured a range of youth-centric activities:
- Voice of the Youth Session: This session provided a platform for young people to share their views on water and climate issues, aiming to inspire and mobilize youth participation in global water governance.
- Youth Podcast: Water Talk: A podcast series that engaged and informed young people worldwide on water issues.
- #ShareWaterStories Campaign: This campaign encouraged youth to share their personal experiences and stories related to water conservation and management.
These activities were not just about participation; they were about making our voices heard and our ideas valued. The #ShareWaterStories Campaign and the podcast series were particularly effective in connecting young people from different parts of the world, deepening a sense of global solidarity and shared purpose on water advocacy.
Achievements and Impact
The recognition and awards given to the top participants from the YWSL program highlighted to the forum’s commitment to celebrating youth contributions. Ten selected participants were sponsored to present their papers, showcasing innovative solutions to water challenges. This acknowledgment was not just a personal achievement but a collective victory for youth involvement in water governance.
A Call to Action
The 10th World Water Forum in Bali demonstrated that youth are not just participants but essential stakeholders in the quest for sustainable water solutions. Our involvement in this forum was a powerful reminder that the future of water governance depends on the active engagement and innovative spirit of the younger generations.
As we move forward, it is crucial to maintain this momentum. We must continue to advocate for our place at the table, ensuring that our voices are not only heard but acted upon. The future of our planet’s water resources lies in the hands of young leaders who are ready to challenge the status quo and drive meaningful change.
